Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

What is sensorimotor psychotherapy?

Also called Somatic psychotherapy or SP, is a holistic, bottom-up approach to psychotherapy that centres the body and includes emotional and cognitive processing and integration in healing from trauma impacts.

We may explore posture, movement, body sensations, nervous system responses or attachment related behaviours and wounds.

This way of working incorporates mindfulness skills, psychoeducation around trauma impacts and relationship skill building.

We will work to restore a sense of agency and empowerment in the body and mind moving into a sense of freedom

What SP helps with:

- PTSD, C-PTSD

- Nightmares, flashbacks & sleep issues

- Relational wounds & difficulties

- Harming self, eating disorders or wreckless behaviour

- Sexual trauma

- Recovery from interpersonal violence and relational abuse such as impacts from gaslighting

- Chronic anxiety, numbness, avoidance or dissociation

- Somatic symptoms or pain

- Childhood abuse/ neglect or developmental trauma

How this helps and how it works:

We may tract body sensations as we discuss your concerns in our session. We may explore beliefs, posture, movement, meaning making, relational and attachment patterns, boundaries, emotions, experiences (implicit or explicit).

- We will work directly with the nervous system through awareness, practices, skills and resource development

- Integration of body sensations, emotion and cognition

- We work in a safe, contained and manageable manner avoiding overwhelm or graphic memory
