About

Alana McLeod

I am an expressive arts therapist and trauma therapist currently residing and practicing in Sudbury, Ontario. I have a diploma in expressive arts therapy from The CREATE Institute in Toronto, Ontario and a Master’s degree in expressive arts therapy, with a minor in psychology from The European Graduate School in Sass- Fee, Switzerland. I have also completed Level 1 & 2  in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy from the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute. I am committed to expanding my range of skills and knowledge in the field of psychotherapy and human relationships.

In broadening my range of knowledge and skills I have taken a variety of additional training in gender issues within the 2SLGBTQQIA communities, shame and trauma, addiction, grief & bereavement, suicide as well as the arts and Indigenous ways of knowing and being in relation to healing.

I am particularly interested in empowerment through different ways of storytelling, through body movement, visual art, writing, voice work, film and photography and music making. I am also concerned with the impacts our socioeconomic and environmental positions have on health.

How I work

I work using a blend of expressive arts therapy and sensorimotor psychotherapy. This is therapy utilizing multiple different art forms combined with body based trauma therapy. I think that this blend of these two therapies is an effective way to gently access different parts of the body and mind. Working with the arts or the body are not mandatory either, I also regularly work with talk therapy, mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy. It is not uncommon for an entire session to be spent talking.

I am your companion throughout your process of overcoming your difficulties, traumatic life events and opening up to a creative and healthy life. You are the expert of your life and I want to use my skills to help while meeting you where you are at in your journey. I approach each session with respect, mindfulness and genuine curiosity. I am interested in you, your life and relationship to your environment.

I have experience working with opening creative blockages, survivors of interpersonal violence and abuse such as sexual assault and domestic violence, adults with a history of child-hood sexual abuse, people with diagnoses of post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex post- traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD).

I can help with sleep issues, anxiety, depression, loneliness, grief & loss, stress related to chronic illness such as multiple chemical sensitivities, persistent feelings of sadness and feeling a lack of meaning and joy in life.
